The Most Useful Alexa Fire TV Commands (2021) (1)

Updated: July 29, 2021

If you’re like me, you’re constantly losing your remote control.

So a big luxury of building out a smart home has been the ability to use Alexa commands to control my Fire TV Stick by voice.

Before we dive into the details, here’s an overview of what this guide will cover:

  1. The Basics: What is a Fire TV, and why would I want one?
  2. Compatibility: Which Fire TV device(s) support Alexa voice commands?
  3. Set-Up: How do I set-up Alexa with my Fire TV device?
  4. Voice Control: Which Alexa Fire TV commands can I use to control my device?

The Basics

Amazon Fire TV Devices

“Fire TV” is Amazon’s line of streaming media players.

This line consists of three main products:

1. Amazon Fire TV Stick: a device similar to a flash drive, which plugs into your HDMI port

2. Amazon Fire TV Cube: a set-top box, which is essentially a Fire TV Stick with a built-in Alexa speaker

3. "Fire TV-Edition" TV: A 24-32"Toshiba or Insignia TV, with the Fire TV platform built in

Types of Fire TV Sticks

There are three version of Fire Sticks and best-selling Fire TV product (by far) is the Fire TV Stick, which now comes in three versions or tiers:

  • The standard Fire TV Stick (priced at ~$40-$50)
  • A budget Fire TV Stick Liteversion, which is ~$10 cheaper, but comes with a much worse remote
  • A premium Fire TV Stick 4Kversion, which is ~$10 more expensive than the base model, but allows for 4K Ultra HD resolution whereas the two other models “only” permit 1080p HD.

Three Reasons People Buy Fire Sticks

There are three major reasons people buy streaming media players (like the Fire TV devices).

1. Access To Content

Streaming media players like Fire Sticks are platforms that help distribute content for first-parties (e.g., Prime Video) and third-parties (streaming services, movie studios, etc.).

This includes sworn enemies of Amazon’s, like Google (YouTube TV) and Apple (Apple TV+) as well as:

  • Streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, Prime Video, and 100+ others
  • Live TV through four services:Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling, and Philo
  • Thousands of free apps, games, and Alexa skills

2. Less Bundling, More Savings

The second reason people buy Fire Sticks? To get away from the high (monopoly-enabled) prices of cable TV.

While cable TV can cost $150+/month, you do not pay a monthly fee with a Fire TV device. Why?

Cable TV companies sell you the platform and the content bundled together.

With Fire TV and similar streaming media players, you buy the platform only. You then choosea la carte the services that you want (if any).

(Plus, there’s a ton of free content on Fire TV. So even if you don’t pay for a streaming service like Netflix, you’ll still have access to 1,000’s of movies and TV shows through the apps which make money through ads only

3. Voice Control

The final reason consumers buy Fire TV devices is for the wide range of voice control options.

The Most Useful Alexa Fire TV Commands (2021) (6)

Since Amazon developed both Alexa and the Fire TV platform, it’s no surprise that Fire TV has the largest number of Alexa commands available of any similar platform.

(The other three major players are Roku, Google Chromecast, and Apple TV.)

The Four Methods

Fire TV Voice Control Options

Next up:your four options for getting in touch with Alexa to control your Fire TV device.

The first way to call on Alexa is through the voice remote that comes with every Fire TV Stick, Cube, and TV.

You simply have to press and hold the microphone button at the top of your remote and then speak your command into the remote.

2. The Fire TV Mobile App

Your second option is to use the Fire TV appon your smartphone (both of which are free)

This is essentially a digital version of the Fire TV voice remote above. To reach Alexa, you have to open the app and simply push the microphone button at the top of the home screen.

This option and the prior one are not 100% voice and therefore not 100% hands-free. Searching is still infinitely easier than scrolling through pages or… typing. one. letter. at. a. time.

But we can do better…

3. Amazon Echo Speaker + Fire Stick

This method here involves pairing an Amazon Echo smart speaker (preferably an Echo or Echo Dot) with your Fire TV device.

An Important Note on Compatibility

In order to use voice commands with your device, you must have a Fire TV Stick and an Alexa device from the below lists (any combination works). Said another way:

If you bought your Alexa and Fire TV devices in or after 2018, you will be able to use Alexa Fire TV commands

Compatible Fire TV Sticks

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K
Amazon Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen)
Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite

(Video) Fire TV Stick voice commands - Hopefully ALL of them

Compatible Alexa Devices

Amazon Echo (2nd, 3rd, & 4th Gen)
AmazonEcho Plus (1st & 2nd Gen)
AmazonEcho Dot (3rd & 4th Gen)
AmazonEcho Dot with Clock (All Gens)
AmazonEcho Studio orEcho Sub
AmazonEcho Shows (All Gens) *

* Not all Fire TV features are available when using an Echo Show

4. Built-In Speaker (Fire TV Cube)

Each of the above methods relies on two devices: a Fire TV Stick plus either a remote, smartphone, or Echo speaker.

Why not combine the two and have an Echo speaker with a Fire Stick built-in?!

Of course, Amazon has thought of this too and the device is called the Fire TV Cube.

We would pass on the Fire TV Cube for three reasons:

(1) It's pointless (at best): By combining the Fire Stick + speaker, the combined Fire TV cube must sit next to the TV. Meaning, you lose valuable flexibility in terms of where to put the speaker (for Alexa to hear you best, for acoustics, etc.)

(2) It's over-priced: it's twice the cost of buying a Fire Stick and Echo Dot separately

(3) It's "aesthetically-challenged"

Wrapping Up

The perfectionists among us may have realized that we’re not all the waythere yet.

To completely ditch your remote, you still need your voice to turn your TV on/off and to get to your Fire TV’s HDMI input. And to do this, you need an Alexa-compatible smart TV.

If you’re lucky enough to have a recent smart TV made by LG, Samsung, Sony, or Vizio, your TV is likely Alexa-compatible already. (Check out the linked guides for more on compatibility.)

And that should do it for this guide! If you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or send us an email.

Otherwise, rest those fingers, relish these Alexa Fire TV commands, and we hope to see you back here soon!
