so, i was rearranging things in my kegorator the other day and in the process needed to slightly reposition the regulator in relation to the co2 tank. so, i grabbed it and gave it a slight twist to get it where i needed it to be (about 1/4 of a turn). i figured this wouldn't hurt anything. but, what ended up happening is the pipe that comes out of the co2 tank and into the regulator body apparently tightened into the regulator body a little bit more and this was the breaking point. so, now what i have is a crack that is about 1" long and about 1mm wide in the regulator body. it leaks there when the tank is opened, but i just leave the tank shut. i have been using it as needed to keep my kegs pressurized, but i want to know if i am at risk of blowing myself to pieces by continuing to use this until i get a replacement regulator.what do ya'll think?i think i'm ok, but will replace the regulator asap.

I wouldn't want any of my body parts near that thing when it goes.

that's the thing that worries me a little...given the height of it when it's sitting in the fridge, it's right in front of a pretty bad spot. think i should hold off on using it altogether until the new one comes in?

I second that. You are reducing about 800 psi from the tank. Not to be taken lightly.

actually, just under 1000 psi at this point. so, ya'll think it has the potential to completely rupture and do some serious damage if i keep effing with it, huh?dang, i won't have the new regulator in time for this weekend and have some folks coming over. i may go try to find one of those co2 cartridge adapters at the lhbs.

i'm pretty surprised the dang thing cracked in the first place. i said i turned it about 1/4 turn, but it was really only about 1/8th turn. instead of going straight up and down, it was leaning back at about 45 degrees. i twisted it so it was standing straight up and down, which would be 1/8th turn.

they'd be good to have for emergencies anyway. a good insurance policy to avoid losing body parts

I have not. a quick bit of googling seems to say that it takes 2 of those catridges to serve 5 gallons. does your LHBS just sell regulators or maybe you already ordered one? know any other HBers whose regulator you can borrow?

yeah...i'm not sure what i'm going to do at this point. i may just buy another regulator from the lhbs and have a spare. i do have a friend that recently started brewing, but he's not kegging yet. maybe i will give the extra to him to help encourage him to take the plunge to kegging.

You can rent one from a liquor store, usually.

welcome to the land of ABC. we don't have liquor stores like you are familiar with. liquor stores are state controlled via the abc board, and they only sell liquor. beer is sold in gas stations and grocery stores. from my past experience, the few places that actually sell kegs do not have gas equipment. they just have the kegs and pump taps.

I would definitely recommend having a spare regulator; really, I would recommend a spare everything (if you can afford and have the space). Things always seem to break when you need them the most, so having a spare alleviates any stress that a potential problem may have for you.
